By range i mean the distance between the reader and the tag. I want to be able to ensure a tag will be found within a certain distance every time. Sort of a proximity sensor with a unique id.
What i mean is, can i guarantee that a tag will be read if the reader is say within 0.5m of it? and is it possible to ensure that a certain distance is the reading cut off point.

I am attempting to create a system that remotely detects another unique item electronically without having to purchase an expensive RFID tag and reader. Additionally, I believe a proximity sensor can only detect the presence of ANY item rather than a specific and unique item. Also, if possible I would like the solution to incorporate compact items that need to be placed on a bicycle and a keychain. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!
